about

"indesterren" appeared rapidly after "abendromen"in the spring and summer of 2016. I had a process in place for moving things from piano improvs to finished tracks and, apparently, I still had some time on my hands in the midst of the many other album projects for other people that were occupying my days. Looking back on my calendar now I can't imagine how this record came into being. I do remember wanting to finish it while my younger son was still seven, as the "waltz" was written for him. He's heading for high school now.

I was still in the same headspace as I was when I wrote "abendromen," though. Very much feeling stuck and in limbo between lives and living situations. I wish I knew what brought tracks like "vervagen" or "the raven" out of the universal spider webs and through my fingers. Those stand out to me, but there's still something very "true" to me about the album (especially tracks 2-7 in running order), even though my life has changed so much. It was very enjoyable engaging with these songs creatively again.

I let the synths and guitars do more of the speaking on this album, and the back half of the original album pretty much enters a full float zone at the end of "false cross." It was those really ambient tracks that eventually opened the door to Spotted Peccary and brought my album "How It Happened" into being.

"Venus" is the only track of mine that has a guest lead player... and I still love what Jeff brought to the track in terms of sonics and mood. We made an entire album a few years later with our friend Will that did okay.

When I dove into the remaster I discovered two finished tracks in the album folder that I had forgotten I had made. "The astronavigator" and "earthrise" finish the chapter of music from that year. "Earthrise" in particular seems to be brighter and more hopeful than the other music I was making at the time... I'm glad to have found it.

Thanks for listening!
