about

memories of time passing.

"the large underground space" sits at 42°49'26"N, 70°55'53"W.
It's a massive steel room under a hill in Maudslay State Park. I have no idea why it's there, but it's dark, and damp, and all kinds of echoey.

"shadows lean on sawyer's island" at 42°45'03"N, 70°50'08"W.
Sawyer's Island is a quick escape to the marsh from Newburyport. A three minute walk leads to a wide view of a tributary winding across the marsh to the Parker River. One of my favorite spots in the world.

"the hidden pond" is at 42°38'10"N, 70°55'13"W.
Tucked away inside the Ipswich River Audubon is a pond where the outside world vanishes completely. There is a boardwalk around the lake that leads through massive stone caves, and the birds will land in and eat from your hands if you're still enough.

"where the highway was" is no longer at 42°48'43"N, 70°54'44"W.
The old route 95 still exists in places alongside the modern super highway that runs from Florida to Maine. Near us, one length of the old road is a pedestrian path through the woods that seems long forgotten.

"the river shapes the stone" at 44°07'20"N, 71°40'59"W.
"The Basin" is in Franconia, NH where the Pemigewasset River has shaped the stone into soft curves. The way the water shapes the earth fascinates me.

"a flight above the divide" was in motion over Colorado. In the abstract it's hard to imagine lingering at more than 500 miles an hour, but crossing the Great Divide takes a long time.

"the clearing on the hill" is at 42°46'08"N, 70°51'01"W.
Old Town Hill, in Newbury, MA, is tucked on a small side road (that leads to White's Bridge... see "ghosts") and has two parking spaces by the trail gate. A short switchback path leads to the top where the trees clear and the marshes to the east wind out to the Atlantic Ocean.
